Was (wer) ist carrier signal - definition

WAVEFORM (USUALLY SINUSOIDAL) THAT IS MODULATED (MODIFIED) WITH AN INPUT SIGNAL FOR THE PURPOSE OF CONVEYING INFORMATION
Carrier frequency; Carrier (telecommunication); Carrier Wave; Carrier frequencies; Carrier-wave; Carrier leakage; Carrier signal; Unmodulated carrier; Carrier Waves

carrier signal
<communications> A continuous signal of a single frequency capable of being modulated by a second, data-carrying signal. In radio communication, the two common kinds of modulation are amplitude modulation and frequency modulation. (1995-03-01)
carrier wave
¦ noun a high-frequency electromagnetic wave modulated in amplitude or frequency to convey a signal.
Signalling
  • A digital signal has two or more distinguishable waveforms, in this example, high voltage and low voltages, each of which can be mapped onto a digit. Characteristically, noise can be removed from digital signals provided it is not too extreme.
  • A binary signal, also known as a logic signal, is a digital signal with two distinguishable levels

Carrier wave

In telecommunications, a carrier wave, carrier signal, or just carrier, is a waveform (usually sinusoidal) that is modulated (modified) with an information-bearing signal(called the message signal or modulation signal) for the purpose of conveying information.

This carrier wave usually has a much higher frequency than the message signal does. This is because it is impractical to transmit signals with low frequencies.

The purpose of the carrier is usually either to transmit the information through space as an electromagnetic wave (as in radio communication), or to allow several carriers at different frequencies to share a common physical transmission medium by frequency division multiplexing (as in a cable television system).

The term originated in radio communication, where the carrier wave creates the waves which carry the information (modulation) through the air from the transmitter to the receiver. The term is also used for an unmodulated emission in the absence of any modulating signal.

In music production, carrier signals can be controlled by a modulating signal to change the sound property of an audio recording and add a sense of depth and movement.
