1. Walking Dress – a cambric muslin dress; the bottom of the skirt is trimmed with a flounce of scolloped work, disposed in deep plaits, and the spaces between left plain; in the middle of each space is a muslin tab; this trimming is surmounted by another composed of full puffings of muslin, with lozenges between, and a rouleau of muslin at the top.

Any other star would have simply cancelled the show altogether, yet our Kylie donned her sequins and feather plumes to sing five songs, before she announced: ‘I‘m sorry and I‘ve never had to do this in my career before – but I can‘t sing on.‘ The exhibition is a retrospective of the two decades since Kylie burst into the public consciousness as Charlene on the Australian soap Neighbours. (Yes, the denim dungarees will be on show, axle grease intact, as well as that awful muslin dress with outsize pockets from the 1'87 video for I Should Be So Lucky.) It is also an intimate portrait of how a girl became a woman, how she shed the bubble perm and the snow–washed, high–waisted denim, made her own decisions, became beautiful and sexy by sheer force of will, and emerged stronger, wiser and lovelier than ever.
