Ως Μεσόγειος είναι γνωστή από τα αρχαιότατα χρόνια μεγάλη κλειστή θάλασσα, που βρίσκεται ανάμεσα σε δύο ηπείρους: την Ευρασία και την Αφρική. Στα δυτικά συνδέεται με τον Ατλαντικό Ωκεανό, δια του πορθμού του Γιβραλτάρ, στα ανατολικά με την Ερυθρά θάλασσα, δια της διώρυγας του Σουέζ και με τη Θάλασσα του Μαρμαρά, δια των στενών του Ελλησπόντου.
