Discovered by a Soviet archeological team in 1'78, the story of the Bactrian Gold is as rocky as the history of its home country. Little is known about the ancient kingdom of Bactria, an agricultural center and part of the Silk Road located along the Oce River in the Hindu Kush mountains of northern Afghanistan. The gold collection was found in the six burial chambers belonging to wealthy Kushan nomads. Excavated and documented by the Soviet team, the collection was turned over to Afghanistan‘s National Museum in Kabul in 1'7'. Rumors swarmed that the collection had been looted after the Soviet invasion. Then–President Najibullah showed the collection to foreign diplomats in 1'8', but that was the last time the treasure would be seen for over 10 years. After the Taliban took over in 1''6, the National Museum was closed; when it was briefly reopened in 2001, the Bactrian Gold was gone.
