<bus, standard> (Or "IEEE 1394", "FireWire", "I-Link") A 1995 Macintosh/IBM PC serial bus interface standard offering high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data services. 1394 can transfer data between a computer and its peripherals at 100, 200, or 400 Mbps, with a planed increase to 2 Gbps. Cable length is limited to 4.5 m but up to 16 cables can be daisy-chained yielding a total length of 72 m. It can daisy-chain together up to 63 peripherals in a tree-like structure (as opposed to SCSI's linear structure). It allows peer-to-peer device communication, such as communication between a scanner and a printer, to take place without using system memory or the CPU. It is designed to support plug-and-play and hot swapping. Its six-wire cable is not only more convenient than SCSI cables but can supply up to 60 watts of power, allowing low-consumption devices to operate without a separate power cord. Some expensive camcorders have included this bus since Autumn 1995. It is expected to be used to carry SCSI, with possible application to home automation using repeaters. Wikipedia

Host controller interface (USB, Firewire)

A host controller interface (HCI) is a register-level interface that enables a host controller for USB or IEEE 1394 hardware to communicate with a host controller driver in software. The driver software is typically provided with an operating system of a personal computer, but may also be implemented by application-specific devices such as a microcontroller.

On the expansion card or motherboard controller, this involves much custom logic, with digital logic engines in the motherboard's controller chip, plus analog circuitry managing the high-speed differential signals. On the software side, it requires a device driver (called a Host Controller Driver, or HCD).

Examples of use of FireWire
1. He explained that you can use a digital camera with the 40Gb one and that it‘s got firewire.
2. In all other ways the build quality seems solid, though, with tethered covers over the Advanced Accessory Shoe, HDMI/FireWire ports, and mic/headphone/component out jacks.
3. Missing features we‘re less happy about having to live without on include any kind of mobile broadband, an SD card slot, FireWire, an onboard Ethernet jack, and Express card slot.
4. "Apple‘s celebrated iPod MP3 player and storage device combines (a) FireWire and Flash memory; (b) a single scroll–wheel to navigate – a near–perfect simplification of the controls; (c) dedicated but Windows–compatible iTunes software; (d) the signature elegance of the iPod itself.
