oath
n. 1) a swearing to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, which would subject the oath-taker to a prosecution for the crime of perjury if he/she knowingly lies in a statement either orally in a trial or deposition or in writing. Traditionally, the oath concludes "so help me God," but the approval of a supreme being is often omitted. Criminal perjury charges are rare, however, since the person stating the untruth will almost always claim error, mistake, loss of memory or opinion. At the beginning of any testimony by a witness, the clerk or court reporter administers an oath to the witness. 2) The "swearing in" of a person assuming a public office, sometimes called the "oath of office." 3) sworn commitment of allegiance, as to one's country. Oath

Traditionally an oath (from Anglo-Saxon āð, also called plight) is either a statement of fact or a promise taken by a sacrality as a sign of verity. A common legal substitute for those who conscientiously object to making sacred oaths is to give an affirmation instead. Nowadays, even when there is no notion of sanctity involved, certain promises said out loud in ceremonial or juridical purpose are referred to as oaths. "To swear" is a verb used to describe the taking of an oath, to making a solemn vow.

Examples of use of OATH
1. I wish we were administering the oath of office. (LAUGHTER) The oath.
2. The oath itself, however, is the only oath whose exact terms are specified in the Constitution.
3. The oath is traditionally sworn in front of a town‘s elders, though some women take the oath privately.
4. Swearing of members – at the start of a new parliament or after a byelection, members take the oath holding the New Testament (or in the case of a Jew or Muslim, the Old Testament or Koran) and say the words of the oath (which are on a card held by a clerk). Members may also take the oath in the Scottish manner – take an alternative form of oath or make a solemn affirmation instead of an oath.
5. "I took an oath of office to the Constitution, I didn‘t take an oath of office to my party or my president," he recently told reporters.
