What (who) is address register - definition

CPU REGISTER THAT EITHER STORES THE MEMORY ADDRESS FROM WHICH DATA WILL BE FETCHED FROM THE CPU, OR THE ADDRESS TO WHICH DATA WILL BE SENT AND STORED
Address Register; Memory Address Register

Memory address register
In a computer, the memory address register (MAR) is the CPU register that either stores the memory address from which data will be fetched to the CPU registers, or the address to which data will be sent and stored via system bus.
Instruction Address Register
  • Front panel of an [[IBM 701]] computer introduced in 1952. Lights in the middle display the contents of various registers. The '''instruction counter''' is at the lower left.
PROCESSOR REGISTER THAT INDICATES THE LOCATION IN MEMORY OF THE CURRENTLY-EXECUTING INSTRUCTION IN THE BINARY CODE OF A PROGRAM
Instruction pointer; Program Counter; Program register; Instruction address register; Programme counter; Instruction counter; Next instruction pointer; Current instruction pointer; Current instruction; Next instruction; Next instruction address; Next instruction pointer register; Instruction pointer register; Next instruction address register
(IAR) The IBM name for program counter. The IAR can be accessed by way of a supervisor call in supervisor state, but cannot be directly addressed in problem state. (1995-03-21)
Address-range register
IN COMPUTER HARDWARE
Address Range Registers
Address-range registers (ARR) are control registers of the Cyrix 6x86, 6x86MX and MII processors that are used as a control mechanism which provides system software with control of how accesses to memory ranges by the CPU are cached, similar to what memory type range registers (MTRRs) provide on other implementations of the x86 architecture.

Memory address register

In a computer, the memory address register (MAR ) is the CPU register that either stores the memory address from which data will be fetched to the CPU registers, or the address to which data will be sent and stored via system bus.

In other words, this register is used to access data and instructions from memory during the execution phase of instruction. MAR holds the memory location of data that needs to be accessed. When reading from memory, data addressed by MAR is fed into the MDR (memory data register) and then used by the CPU. When writing to memory, the CPU writes data from MDR to the memory location whose address is stored in MAR. MAR, which is found inside the CPU, goes either to the RAM (random-access memory) or cache.

The MAR register is half of a minimal interface between a microprogram and computer storage; the other half is a MDR.

In general, MAR is a parallel load register that contains the next memory address to be manipulated, for example the next address to be read or written.

Examples of use of address register
1. August 25 2005 03÷00 The government‘s intention to establish a single, comprehensive national address register, announced in May, has been shelved because the parties involved could not agree a way forward, undermining the country‘s e–government strategy and raising a barrier to delivering efficient public and private sector services.
