Ventriloquism

Ventriloquism, or ventriloquy, is a performance act of stagecraft in which a person (a ventriloquist) creates the illusion that their voice is coming from elsewhere, usually a puppeteered prop known as a "dummy". The act of ventriloquism is ventriloquizing, and the ability to do so is commonly called in English the ability to "throw" one's voice.

5. Ventriloquism has a gorgeous whiff of nostalgia, of old–time variety and communal jollity in music halls full of people in tea dresses and Oxford bags according to God‘s gender rules, and while I would rather jemmy my own eyes out with a pen than actually watch the Conjoined Tap Dancing Bradshaws, the Plymouth Cleat Welders or Irene "The Hatpin of Hilariosity" McGonigall do their schtick, it all must be preserved.
