Abraham Mapu

Abraham Mapu (1808 in Vilijampolė, Kaunas – 1867 in Königsberg, Prussia) was a Lithuanian novelist. He wrote in Hebrew as part of the Haskalah (enlightenment) movement. His novels, with their lively plots encompassing heroism, adventure and romantic love in Biblical settings, contributed to the rise of the Zionist movement.

Examples of use of Abraham Mapu
1. Pattersons work on Abraham Mapu (1808–67), the first Hebrew novelist, was published in 1'64, and his wider treatment of the Hebrew novel in its Russian setting was published in the same year (The Hebrew Novel in Czarist Russia). These two monographs, followed in 1''0 by A Phoenix in Fetters, provide students of the subject with a foundation for understanding the complex evolution of the modern Hebrew novel.
