После 2-й мировой войны началось движение за создание единого литературного языка Большая часть населения (77\%, 1961) придерживается местных традиционных верований (культ предков, политеистические религии), остальные - христиане (протестанты и католики). Народы А. достигли высокого уровня общественного и культурного развития задолго до прихода европейцев. В 18-19 вв. у них существовало сильное централизованное государство (см. Ашанти государство). С начала 20 в. по 1957 территория расселения А. находилась под английским и французским господством. В 1957 получила независимость Гана (бывшая английская колония Золотой Берег), в 1960 - Берег Слоновой Кости (бывшая французская колония).
