Russian alphabet

The Russian alphabet (ру́сский алфави́т, russkiy alfavit, or ру́сская а́збука, russkaya azbuka, more traditionally) is the script used to write the Russian language. It comes from the Cyrillic script, which was devised in the 9th century for the first Slavic literary language, Old Slavonic. Initially an old variant of the Bulgarian alphabet, it became used in the Kievan Rusʹ since the 10th century to write what would become the Russian language.

The modern Russian alphabet consists of 33 letters: twenty consonants (⟨б⟩, ⟨в⟩, ⟨г⟩, ⟨д⟩, ⟨ж⟩, ⟨з⟩, ⟨к⟩, ⟨л⟩, ⟨м⟩, ⟨н⟩, ⟨п⟩, ⟨р⟩, ⟨с⟩, ⟨т⟩, ⟨ф⟩, ⟨х⟩, ⟨ц⟩, ⟨ч⟩, ⟨ш⟩, ⟨щ⟩), ten vowels (⟨а⟩, ⟨е⟩, ⟨ё⟩, ⟨и⟩, ⟨о⟩, ⟨у⟩, ⟨ы⟩, ⟨э⟩, ⟨ю⟩, ⟨я⟩), a semivowel / consonant (⟨й⟩), and two modifier letters or "signs" (⟨ь⟩, ⟨ъ⟩) that alter pronunciation of a preceding consonant or a following vowel.

Examples of use of Russian alphabet
1. Since then, Chumakov has become the language‘s leading yofikator, a word he coined himself that refers to one who fights for the rights of the seventh letter in the Russian alphabet.
2. I felt like a child again learning my "ABVs," but had to admit that the Russian alphabet seems so logical, works well, and is broken into simple sounds with few exceptions.
3. Editor, The column on the Russian alphabet raised many points that I have heard time and again, especially by users of the Latin alphabet when it comes time to learn Russian.
4. One newspaper in Ulyanovsk –– where Nikolai Karamzin is said to have invented the letter in 17'7 as a substitute for two letters in the old Russian alphabet –– once ran a competition to see who could name the most non–profane words beginning with the letter.
5. I think the type of logic inherent in the Russian alphabet would provide an interesting challenge to the use of Latin –– and perhaps promote a cleanup of silly exceptions in the way English is written –– making communication far more accessible and efficient.
