Runway edge lights

Runway edge lighting are used to outline the edges of runways during periods of darkness or restricted visibility conditions. These light systems are classified according to the intensity they are capable of producing:

  • High intensity runway lights (HIRL)
  • Medium intensity runway lights (MIRL)
  • Low intensity runway lights (LIRL)

Many HIRL and MIRL systems have variable intensity controls, whereas the LIRLs normally have one intensity setting. At airports where there is a control tower, the tower will manage the lights to account for visibility and pilot preference, but some airports do not have control towers. These airports will have Pilot Controlled Lighting, or PCL, where pilots can adjust the lighting themselves by keying a microphone button a certain number of times.

The majority of runway edge lights are clear or white, but there are some exceptions to provide additional information to pilots in certain circumstances.

When an instrument runway lighting is designed, the last 600 metres (2,000 ft), or one-half of the runway length available (whichever is less), are bi-directional. They look white to the pilot approaching from the short end of the runway, but to a pilot approaching from the other end, who would be landing or taking off in that direction, they are yellow to indicate that the runway is nearing the end.

Examples of use of runway capacity
1. But its limited runway capacity and overcrowding have allowed competing airports in Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam to threaten its position.
2. October 25 2005 20:58 The airport on Tuesday presented a draft master plan, which envisages Luton taking the lead in providing extra runway capacity in the overcrowded south–east of England ahead of both London Stansted and London Heathrow airports.
3. "It will provide more runway capacity that the economy needs, good facilities for passengers, and value for money for airlines, but will minimise the impact on the local environment." Stop Stansted Expansion, a coalition of residents, local groups and councils, accused BAA of a "land grab" and claimed virtually everyone in the area was against the plan.
4. Detroit Metropolitan Airport spokesman Mike Conway said good weather helped keep things moving despite heavier than normal passenger volume. Some of our customers are inconvenienced because of delays at other airports, but for the most part we‘ve got a lot of runway capacity here, plenty of gates, plenty of parking,‘‘ he said Monday morning. Throw good visibility on top of it, it adds up to a good Thanksgiving weekend.‘‘ At O‘Hare International Airport, minor delays were being reported Monday morning as fog rolled into the Chicago area, threatening to cause headaches for travelers during the airport‘s busiest travel day of the Thanksgiving season.
