Rupture of membranes

Rupture of membranes (ROM) or amniorrhexis is a term used during pregnancy to describe a rupture of the amniotic sac. Normally, it occurs spontaneously at full term either during or at the beginning of labor. Rupture of the membranes is known colloquially as "breaking the water" or as one's "water breaking." A premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is a rupture of the amnion that occurs prior to the onset of labor. This typically occurs before the pregnancy's 37 week gestation. In the United States, more than 120,000 pregnancies per year are affected by a premature rupture of membranes, which is the cause of about one third of preterm deliveries.

Sometimes, a child is born with no rupture of the amniotic sac (no rupture of membranes). In such cases, the child may still be entirely within the sac once born; such a birth is known as an en-caul birth.

Examples of use of rupture of membranes
1. Will I have the freedom to choose positions in labor (such as walking, sitting, squatting, kneeling, using a birth ball, etc.)? What is their policy regarding artificial rupture of membranes?
2. Smoking significantly increases the risk of infertility among women, but once they get pregnant, it is associated with an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy (the fetus implanting outside the womb). When the fetus is in the uterus, smoking is associated with a higher risk of premature rupture of membranes and premature delivery.
3. Older mothers are more likely to be obese, take medication and have a medical disorder such as arthritis, depression, cancer, or higher risk of heart attack Pregnancy diseases increase, including the risk of pre–eclampsia (causing abnormally high blood pressure), haemorrhage, premature rupture of membranes and placenta praevia (low–lying placenta covering the cervix) Labour inductions, dysfunctional uterine contractions and abnormalities of the foetal heart rate are more common Emergency Caesarean sections are more common in older mothers, carrying complications of bleeding, infection, thrombosis and infertility Children of older fathers may suffer from schizophrenia and genetic disorders
