Hypothalamus

The hypothalamus (from Ancient Greek ὑπό (hupó) 'under', and θάλαμος (thálamos) 'chamber') is a part of the brain that contains a number of small nuclei with a variety of functions. One of the most important functions is to link the nervous system to the endocrine system via the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus is located below the thalamus and is part of the limbic system. In the terminology of neuroanatomy, it forms the ventral part of the diencephalon. All vertebrate brains contain a hypothalamus. In humans, it is the size of an almond.

The hypothalamus is responsible for regulating certain metabolic processes and other activities of the autonomic nervous system. It synthesizes and secretes certain neurohormones, called releasing hormones or hypothalamic hormones, and these in turn stimulate or inhibit the secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus controls body temperature, hunger, important aspects of parenting and maternal attachment behaviours, thirst, fatigue, sleep, and circadian rhythms.

Ejemplos de uso de hypothalamus
1. Recent research suggests it works on the hypothalamus, where it may help regulate body temperature.
2. "We believe the memory circuits we are stimulating are close by, physically touching the hypothalamus.
3. Excalia gets round this by tricking the hypothalamus – the brain‘s weight and appetite thermostat – into keeping the metabolism running fast.
4. Scans showed the reaction of the hypothalamus, which is involved in arousal and hormone release, and compared it with feedback from 14 normal volunteers.
5. "Little is known about the neurobiology of trust, although the phenomenon is beginning to attract attention." Oxytocin is secreted in brain tissue and synthesized by the hypothalamus.
