Viral synapse
TYPE OF CELLULAR JUNCTION
Viral Synapse; Virological synapse
Viral synapse (or virological synapse) is a molecularly organized cellular junction that is similar in some aspects to immunological synapses. Many viruses including herpes simplex virus (HSV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) have been shown to instigate the formation of these junctions between the infected ("donor") and uninfected ("target") cell to allow cell-to-cell transmission.
Synaptogenesis
FORMATION OF SYNAPSES BETWEEN NEURONS IN THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Synapse formation; Synaptic development
Synaptogenesis is the formation of synapses between neurons in the nervous system. Although it occurs throughout a healthy person's lifespan, an explosion of synapse formation occurs during early brain development, known as exuberant synaptogenesis.
Chemical synapse
  • Artistic interpretation of the major elements in chemical synaptic transmission. An electrochemical wave called an [[action potential]] travels along the [[axon]] of a [[neuron]]. When the action potential reaches the presynaptic terminal, it provokes the release of a synaptic vesicle, secreting its quanta of [[neurotransmitter]] molecules. The neurotransmitter binds to chemical receptor molecules located in the membrane of another neuron, the postsynaptic neuron, on the opposite side of the synaptic cleft.
  • Release of neurotransmitter occurs at the end of axonal branches.

Chemical synapses are biological junctions through which neurons' signals can be sent to each other and to non-neuronal cells such as those in muscles or glands. Chemical synapses allow neurons to form circuits within the central nervous system.
