O que (quem) é proxy ARP - definição

Proxy arp

proxy ARP
<networking> The technique in which one host, usually a router, answers Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) requests intended for another machine. By "faking" its identity, the router accepts responsibility for routing packets to the "real" destination. Proxy ARP allows a site to use a single IP address with two physical networks. Subnetting would normally be a better solution. (2007-09-03)
Proxy ARP
Proxy ARP is a technique by which a proxy server on a given network answers the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) queries for an IP address that is not on that network. The proxy is aware of the location of the traffic's destination and offers its own MAC address as the (ostensibly final) destination.
Proxy (statistics)
VARIABLE USED IN STATISTICS AND EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: NOT IN ITSELF DIRECTLY RELEVANT, BUT THAT SERVES IN PLACE OF AN UNOBSERVABLE OR IMMEASURABLE VARIABLE
Proxy variable; Proxy measurement; Proxy measure
In statistics, a proxy or proxy variable is a variable that is not in itself directly relevant, but that serves in place of an unobservable or immeasurable variable.Upton, G.

Proxy ARP

Proxy ARP is a technique by which a proxy server on a given network answers the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) queries for an IP address that is not on that network. The proxy is aware of the location of the traffic's destination and offers its own MAC address as the (ostensibly final) destination. The traffic directed to the proxy address is then typically routed by the proxy to the intended destination via another interface or via a tunnel.

The process, which results in the proxy server responding with its own MAC address to an ARP request for a different IP address for proxying purposes, is sometimes referred to as publishing.
