FIRST GEOLOGIC PERIOD OF THE CENOZOIC ERA
Paleogene Period; Palaeogene; Palæogene; Paleogene period; Lower Tertiary; Lower tertiary; Late Paleogene; Palaeogene Period; Early Tertiary; Paleogene era; Early Paleogene

Palaeogene
['pal??(?)d?i:n, 'pe?-]
(US Paleogene)
¦ adjective Geology relating to or denoting the earlier division of the Tertiary period (comprising the Palaeocene, Eocene, and Oligocene epochs, from about 65 to 23.3 million years ago).
Origin
C19: from palaeo- + Gk genes (see -gen).
Mammal Paleogene zone
IN GEOLOGY, A TYPE OF ZONE IN THE STRATIGRAPHIC RECORD
European Mammal Paleogene; Mammal Paleogene; European Mammal Paleogene zone; MP zonation; Mammal Paleogene zone; MP zones; MP zone
The Mammal Paleogene zones or MP zones are system of biostratigraphic zones in the stratigraphic record used to correlate mammal-bearing fossil localities of the Paleogene period of Europe. It consists of thirty consecutive zones (numbered MP 1 through MP 30; MN 8 and 9 have been joined into MN 8 + 9 zone; and MP 17 zone is split into two zones - MP 17A and MP 17B zone) defined through reference faunas, well-known sites that other localities can be correlated with.
Climate across Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary
Climate Across Cretaceous-Paleogene Boundary; Climate across Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary; Climate across K-Pg boundary; Climate across the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary; Climate across the K–Pg boundary; Climate across the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary; Climate across the K-Pg boundary
The climate across the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary (K–Pg or formerly the K–T boundary) is very important to geologic time as it marks a catastrophic global extinction event. Numerous theories have been proposed as to why this extinction event happened including an asteroid known as the Chicxulub asteroid, volcanism, or sea level changes.

Paleogene

The Paleogene (IPA: PAY-lee-ə-jeen, -lee-oh-, PAL-ee-; also spelled Palaeogene or Palæogene; informally Lower Tertiary or Early Tertiary) is a geologic period and system that spans 43 million years from the end of the Cretaceous Period 66 million years ago (Mya) to the beginning of the Neogene Period 23.03 Mya. It is the beginning of the Cenozoic Era of the present Phanerozoic Eon. The earlier term Tertiary Period was used to define the span of time now covered by the Paleogene Period and subsequent Neogene Period; despite no longer being recognized as a formal stratigraphic term, 'Tertiary' still sometimes remains in informal use. Paleogene is often abbreviated "Pg" (but the United States Geological Survey uses the abbreviation Pe for the Paleogene on the Survey's geologic maps).

During the Paleogene, mammals diversified from relatively small, simple forms into a large group of diverse animals in the wake of the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event that ended the preceding Cretaceous Period.

This period consists of the Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene epochs. The end of the Paleocene (56 Mya) was marked by the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, one of the most significant periods of global change during the Cenozoic, which upset oceanic and atmospheric circulation and led to the extinction of numerous deep-sea benthic foraminifera and on land, a major turnover in mammals. The term 'Paleogene System' is applied to the rocks deposited during the 'Paleogene Period'.
