accumulator
<processor> In a central processing unit, a register in which intermediate results are stored. Without an accumulator, it would be necessary to write the result of each calculation (addition, multiplication, shift, etc.) to {main memory} and read them back. Access to main memory is slower than access to the accumulator which usually has direct paths to and from the arithmetic and logic unit (ALU). The canonical example is summing a list of numbers. The accumulator is set to zero initially, each number in turn is added to the value in the accumulator and only when all numbers have been added is the result written to main memory. Modern CPUs usually have many registers, all or many of which can be used as accumulators. For this reason, the term "accumulator" is somewhat archaic. Use of it as a synonym for "register" is a fairly reliable indication that the user has been around for quite a while and/or that the architecture under discussion is quite old. The term in full is almost never used of microprocessor registers, for example, though symbolic names for arithmetic registers beginning in "A" derive from historical use of the term "accumulator" (and not, actually, from "arithmetic"). Confusingly, though, an "A" register name prefix may also stand for "address", as for example on the Motorola 680x0 family. 2. <programming> A register, memory location or variable being used for arithmetic or logic (as opposed to addressing or a loop index), especially one being used to accumulate a sum or count of many items. This use is in context of a particular routine or stretch of code. "The FOOBAZ routine uses A3 as an accumulator." [Jargon File] (1999-04-20)
Accumulator
·noun One who, or that which, accumulates, collects, or amasses.
II. Accumulator ·noun A system of elastic springs for relieving the strain upon a rope, as in deep-sea dredging.
III. Accumulator ·noun An apparatus by means of which energy or power can be stored, such as the cylinder or tank for storing water for hydraulic elevators, the secondary or storage battery used for accumulating the energy of electrical charges, ·etc.

RESERVOIR TO STORE AND STABILISE FLUID PRESSURE
Hydraulic accumulators; Pressure accumulator; Accumulator tower
A hydraulic accumulator is a pressure storage reservoir in which an incompressible hydraulic fluid is held under pressure that is applied by an external source of mechanical energy. The external source can be an engine, a spring, a raised weight, or a compressed gas.
Dynamic accumulator
PLANT THAT MINES NUTRIENTS FROM THE SOIL THROUGH ITS ROOTS
Dynamic accumulation; Accumulator plant
Dynamic accumulators is a term used in the permaculture and organic farming literature to indicate plants that gather certain minerals or nutrients from the soil and store them in a more bioavailable form and in high concentration in their tissues, then used as fertilizer or just to improve the mulch.
Accumulator, Electrostatic
Two conducting surfaces oppositely placed, and separated by a dielectric and arranged for the opposite charging of the two surfaces, constitute an accumulator, sometimes termed a condenser. As this arrangement introduces the element of a bound and of a binding charge, the electrostatic capacity of such is greater than that of either or of both of its component surfaces. The thinner the dielectric which separates the conducting surfaces, and the larger the surfaces the greater is the capacity; or the less will be the potential difference which a given charge will establish between its two coatings. The nature of the dielectric also determines its capacity. (See Capacity, Specific Inductive.) Fig. 2. SIR WILLIAM THOMSON'S WATER-DROPPING ACCUMULATOR.
Accumulator (energy)
ENERGY STORAGE DEVICE: A DEVICE WHICH ACCEPTS ENERGY, STORES ENERGY, AND RELEASES ENERGY AS NEEDED
Accumulator batteries
An accumulator is an energy storage device: a device which accepts energy, stores energy, and releases energy as needed. Some accumulators accept energy at a low rate (low power) over a long time interval and deliver the energy at a high rate (high power) over a short time interval.

Antiproton Accumulator
The Antiproton Accumulator (AA) was an infrastructure connected to the Proton–Antiproton Collider (SpS) – a modification of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) – at CERN. The AA was built in 1979 and 1980, for the production and accumulation of antiprotons.
